Does this sound right??

There is a guy on the turbo buick board that said he had an older Monte carlo with a 350 TPI in it with Twisted wedge heads, ported intake and a LT4 Cam, stock everything else. Said he was pulling times of 13.45 in the 1/4mile. And when I was like that sounds a little fast for just a head/cam swap alone and asked him about his computer this is what he said

"Everyone is under the misconception that MAF cars can't run the numbers with stock programming. Not true. Back then, I used to manipulate the fuel pump voltage going back to the ecm to increase the base pulse width. Also, it is amazing what you can accoplish with just a scan tool. The Monte ran consistant 13.5's all day long and just happened to launch real well that one time. Needless to say, I didn't have a lot of money, but I did have lots of time to make things work"

I would figure with the heads/cam that the system would barely run on the stock chip.

So is he telling the truth?

He can very well be. I have a friend with a 350 TPI Monte with stock heads but a bigger cam and it runs awesome. I'd say it's a high 13s car right now and with a head swap mid to low 13 is not out of the question even with the stock ECM. People are always under the impression that their cars wont run anymore after you swap a cam, a head, or put exhaust on. ESPECIALLY with SD system. ALL THAT IS BULL****. The car will run and drive well, just NOT up to what it COULD if the EPROM was edited to reflect the mods.

I think where a custom chip comes more into play is with part throttle and driveability. 13.5 doesnt sound unreasonable either, I could have run a smaller cam than I have in a G-body and run that time... probably would be less headaches than I am having but I am looking for 12's not 13's.

Pete there is something wrong with your car man. I hat a smaller cam higher gear and 305 heads and turned a 13.9
My 60' time would have been in the 1.9 range though.

You should get a scanning software for you car and see if the computer is throwing the Timing out of wack, or if you chip is not getting enough fuel to your engine. It could be a combinatiuon of things, but something is wrong!!
