Wondering about MAF
Wondering about MAF
Can you post what problems a car might have if it had a bad/old/dirty/damaged MAF sensor? I have replaced a lot of parts and sensors on my car over the years, but the one thing I haven't touched is the MAF. My car runs strange sometimes and other times it runs fine. My fuel mileage however, is horrible.
If I were to replace the MAF, would it be ideal to get a used one, or is that a part that should be replaced only with a new one?
Thanks all.

Re: Wondering about MAF
The MAF can cause the problems you describe. I don't know of a good way to test it other than running it on someone else's car...
Re: Wondering about MAF
The MAF can be tested with a voltmeter at its output terminals. A scanner can also monitor MAF indications during test drives.
The ECM programming monitors the MAF input very closely, and if the signal is out of a calculated allowable range (based on engine RPM and throttle position) the ECM will set an error code within 600mS. If the car "runs strange" long enough for you to detect it (more than 600mS) it is more likely due to something else.
