1LE owners-can you solve the fuel tank mystery?

I have searched everywhere and come up with multiple part numbers. I have never got a confirmation from a 1LE owner on what their part numbers are.
I got these numbers from an old post that claims they came out of an '89 Hot Rod Mag
10121026 Fuel Tank
25094804 Sending Unit
25121120 Strainer
The only place that I could pull up any of those numbers was from parts.com and it didn't say anything about 1LE or Performance Package. I didn't see any mention of them when I went through the parts files at the dealer. I found totally different numbers
12509285 Fuel Tank (replaced by PN 10269091)
25027221 Sending Unit
The computer at the dealer listed these as the same parts for all 90-92 F-bodies that have multi-port fuel injection (3.1, 5.0, 5.7). It was no longer 1LE specific. Does any one, especially someone who owns a 1LE, TTA, B4C, or works on them, know which are the right part numbers? Also, would the fuel tank and sending unit from a 4th Gen work as a good alternative? I heard that they were an improved design that didn't have fuel starvation problems during extreme cornering. Can anyone please provide some actual facts about this? Thanks Draino

This is what I don't understand. We looked up an 89 IROC L98 fuel tank and sending unit and it listed one set of part numbers. Then we looked up a 91 Z28 L98 w/1LE and it listed for the fuel tank 10269091 as a service replacement for 12509285 (it listed that as the replacement for all engines) and 25027221 as the sending unit for all engines WITH or Without 1LE except 5.0 TBI. This supported what I had read in the tech section of an early '94 Hot Rod Magazine that stated that all 90-92 F-Bodies got the improved tank and sending unit from the 1LE package. When I was looking at old posts from the board about 1LE's I come across a post that listed the other part numbers (10121026 & 25094804) from an article in Hot Rod from '89 or '90. So did the 88-89 1LE's use a specific tank and pick-up or did they become standard in '90. The only place that lists the other part available is parts.com and I don't know if they have old info or what. I've typed in all kinds of discontinued 3rd gen part numbers in and they list them with a price. They also listed the '91 tank and sending unit including the tank that now lists a service replacement part number. So what's up?????????

Also in all I had read about 4th gen 1LE's, they all used the same tank and pickup as the std. V6 & V8 cars. I know that the tank and sending unit of 4th gens had been improved over the 3rd gen design to prevent fuel starvation (per GM promo booklet from dealer for '93 TA). I know however that the rear framerails and hatch floor board are the same part as the 3rd gen's so I assume that their fuel tank should interchange with ours. Am I right? And would it be better than the 3rd gen 1LE tank?

It would be great if some 1LE or Turbo TA owners could verify about the part numbers so that we get the facts.

ok why is it when I looked it up by the part number that was given in the previous post (10269091) it came back as like $400 and when I looked it up by vehicle ('91 camaro) it came back as <$200. was one a direct GM replacement?

Just repeating what I've heard or read,...

The 1LE was designed to race in showroom stock series, specifically the "Player's Challenge" series(though I believe there was also some consideration for one-off races like "The 24 Hours of Nelson Ledges"). During the early years of this series, different manufacturer's competed. And the F-bodies main class competition was the Porsche 944. Because the Porsche had a smaller engine with better fuel economy, it had an advantage in terms of range. To compensate, GM fitted 1LE's with a larger 18 gallon(stock is 15.5 gal) tank with better baffling, to keep the pickup from being uncovered during hard cornering. After 1990, the "Player's Challenge" became a F-body ony show, and differences in range were no longer an issue. Thus the 1LE's were fitted with the standard size tank.

Sorry, I can't remember where I got this info(it's been a few years), but don't get down on me if you've heard different.

When I did my LG4 -> TPI swap i was going to try and get (what I thought was) a larger fuel tank used on the TTA and the 1LE packages. I read, or someone told me (can't remember) that they used a larger Tank for these cars.

SO!, I have the parts & illistration manual for 82-92 Firebird's, Formula's, T/A's GTA's & TTA's. I could not find a single tank that would be significantly larger. matter of fact, my 83 T/A has the largest tank, Unfortunately it also has the most rust.

According to the parts book, GM used a different tank for the LG4 & TPI, so I was going to swap, both had same displacement.

After looking at the two (and realiizing that there was not a bit of difference between them except the fuel pump, I just put my LG4 tank back in with the TPI fuelpump assembly.

Why am I telling you this??? heck I just started to ramble.

Seriously, My GM book did not list it as being a different displacement, I am not sure exactly what the difference would be. Even where they gave differeing part numbers they seemed the same, I don't have any problems either. There were some braces inside (from top to bottom) those might be eiliminated in the 1LE, who knows...

Thats my 2.5¢ (inflation)

This is straight out of the GM parts manual....There is a differance. Look at:

http://www.metzcon.com/fbodymanual/3-06.htm and click on the part listing.... Part Number 1 is the tank...and you can see that there was an optional tank that was 59 liters as opposed to the 53 liter stock tanks.

Since this was the difference between a 2.8L and 5.0 engine I am sure there is a difference in the 88-89 tank, which I will look up when I get home.

In all the part listings for the 1LE option, it shows a tank with a different part number. Howerver, the capacity is still listed as 59 liters (15.52gal), So if there is a larger capacity tank, they came up with it after 1990 (when my part catalog ends), and it did not go in earlier 1LE's
