Real world performance improvements from advancing timing up past 6* BTDC

I checked my timing a couple days ago and it was way off (too retarded) so I adjusted it back to 6* BTDC and the difference is like night and day. It literally feels like I freed up at least 30 hp. The car was definitely not running to its fullest potential before. The car has ***** that I never knew it had before. My question is this: What kind of improvements can be expected from advancing the timing to say 8* BTDC? Is it really a seat of the pants improvement or is it just a few hp? I've even heard of people advancing it as far as 10* BTDC. Is this too much? Thanks in advance.

I just moved from 6* up to 10* and dam I felt a differance. It smokes them when chirping into 2nd. It never broke loose like that before at 6*

Hell yeah then I may go try it out tonight. Before I adjusted it to 6* I could barely do a burnout but now I have trouble keeping traction. And I could never chirp the tires going into second but now I can. If I can make them break loose going into second from advancing the timing more, I think I will mess my pants. Well I probably don't have quite enough power to do that with my current setup. When I get my 3.73's in the next couple of weeks I bet I'll be able to do it. Anyone else with real world testimonials or advice on this? Thanks

I'd suggest going in 2* increments...FWIW my car rattles like crazy at anymore than 6*'s BTDC.

I have real proof of what happened for my car. This was done at a performance shop on their dyno testing at the rear wheels.
I had mine set to 8* ran it on the dyno, then set it back to 5* and there was almost NO difference. The curves were nearly identical and peak HP and TQ were just about the same.. within .5 of each other.

Of course that is just my car. Results will vary.
1987 IROC, basically stock, with 160,000 miles on it. It had 191 HP and 281 TQ at the wheels, and just ran a best of 14.72 @ 92.

I would not go much past 8 deg without looking at a scanner. You want to see if the computer is pulling timing out due to knock counts. However if you have an Adj FPR you can compensate some for this buy pushing the fuel pressure up. Just don't go too far and lean it out and burn a piston.
