what location is the timing pointer location on the 87-up L98 TPIs? Is it the 12:00 position or the 2:00 position?

2:00 position. If it was in the 12:00 position like TBI's and carbs, the TPI intake would prevent you from seeing it.

on my new gm motor, its at the 10 'o clock spot, and you gotta view it from the passenger side. is the original motor like this?

 

No its a new caprice replacement motor, I currently have a 305 so I guess I have to get a correct dampner.
