Holy Smoke

When I start my 88 Trans-Am 305 Auto, there is a giant puff of blue smoke- when starting cold or hot, but it doesn't blow any smoke during normal running conditions. The smoke smells alot like gas. Could it be valve seals? why would it smell like gas? thanks for your input.

Nice car by the way a very good choice.

blue smoke is usually oil and yes It could be your valve seals.
however if you smell gas I think it could be a leaky injector.
if it doesnt also smoke at WOT I would say it is your seals.

You use synthetic oil? I've noticed in my 88 GTA that with out synthetic it puffs blue when it starts but with it it doesn't.. Kinda strange but ya know....

thats cause synthetic oil combusts differently than regular dino oil. but the puff of blue smoke on start up is bad valve seals.

Actually, synthetic oil is just molecularly perfect. It can slip past seals that regular motor oil cannot. That's why sometimes car that use synthetic oil leak oil when regular oil in the same car will not leak.
