Removing fuel rail from L98.....
Removing fuel rail from L98.....
I'm replacing my injectors on my 88 L98, but I'm having trouble getting the fuel rail off. I've got the four bolts out that hold down the fuel rail, but at the front of the engine where the fuel lines are attached to the block by a bracket is where I'm having trouble. All the pics in the manuals I have show the fuel lines coming straight out of the fuel rail to the front of the block, and the bolts (two bolts holding the bracket to the block in all the pictures)in the bracket beside them. But on my engine the fuel lines bend down in front of the ONE bolt in the bracket, making it impossible to back the bolt out far enough to remove it from the block. I've got the fuel lines disconnected at that bracket, but I can't remove them from that bracket because they can't be backed out because of the altenator bracket. To put it another way, the altenator bracket is in the way of the fuel lines, which is in the way of the fuel rail bracket bolt, which needs to be removed to get the fuel ail off, I'm assuming. I don't see any way the fuel rail can come off with out that bracket coming off, and I'm sure as heck not going to dissasemble half my engine to do it. There's got to be an easier way. I know I have to be missing something, or there's an easier way. Ca anyone help me out here? How do I remove the bracket on the top/front of the block that holds the fuel lines in place, or is it even nessecary to do to get the fuel injectors out?

on mine it was real easy to just take the fuel lines off right there where they meet at that bracket. it sounds like you have a serpientine *spelling* belt system. or at least your alternator is on the other side than mine is. taking your alternator off isn't bad and you should go ahead and do it. think of the cost of taking it somewhere.

yes, I have a serpentine belt system, and the altenator is on the driver's side. I've already torn the car apart a few times trying to get it to start, which is why I'm in no hurry to do it again, just to be able to gain access to an area it seems I should be able to get at another way.
Yes, it is necessary to remove that bracket.
I was going through the exact same thing on Sunday (I'm in the middle of replacing a head gasket). I needed to remove the alternator, and loosen the 2 fuel line connections, and then remove the bracket from the block. I believe it's a 5/8 fitting on there. I don't think it's possible to wiggle the lines out from underneath the alternator... even if it is, good luck trying to get them back in.

I just managed to wiggle the fuel lines out, it seems the more four letter words you use, the better. I don't, however, look forward to trying to wiggle them back in.

It takes all of five minutes to pull the alternator. Do it and enjoy how much easier it is to get the fuel rail in and out.
