Fuel Pump Going?
I have a whinning noise coming from the rear , below the seats. The noise has been there for about a year but basically I ignored it, I suspect it's the fuel pump. I notice the noise is more proniunced when the tank is 1/4 or below, is this normal or should I expect to replace the pump soon?. The car seems to run ok, could it just be a dirty fuel filter that is causing the pump to be strained and make the whinning noise?. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Re: Fuel Pump Going?
I have the same thing happening. Someone told me that it is common in GMs because of somevibration from the pump to the bottom of the tank... I am not completely sure though... If anyone knows anything about this I would also be interested in more information.

Re: Fuel Pump Going?
Update,
I stopped by my local shop the other day, I asked my guy to take a listen-to my dismay,he confirmed it was the fuel pump. Just to double check, he took off the gas cap and I could hear it howling. He suggested I try a new fuel filter first before I go for the fuel pump.
I asked if this was usual for 3rg Gen's to have a howling fuel pump, he mentioned he heard it could be common.
My questions is, has anyone else experienced a howling fuel pump and still be able to operate it without problems, is this normal or should I be safe and replace it. let me know.

Re: Fuel Pump Going?
Plugged or inop fuel tank vent valve or canister purge valve can also cause vacuum and/or pressure to develop and contribute to increased noise.

Re: Fuel Pump Going?
I would notice the howling both ways, either driving or at idle.As I mentioned earlier, it is usually when my tank is 1/4 or below and when i removed the cap it was more pronounced. My car is garaged for winter and happened to take it out last weekend for a spin, unfortunately NY got dumped with 6 inches of snow the other day therefore I have not taken for a ride this weekend.
I will have my car checked out in a few weeks to get ready for the spring cruising, I will have my guy check the fuel pressure, I guess that will be a good starting point to check if my pump is shot.Hope this helps...
