Q-Jet to TPI?

I currently have an 84' LG4...my dad bought a TPI setup (needs fuel pump only) off of an 85' 305 TPI. What all am I gunna need to do here to make the swam. I will probably need to use the "new" wiring harness right, from the TPI that is? What else, will I have to do any modification to make it fit? Anything? Any tips from someone who has done this? Thanks in advance.

OK go to http://www.3rdgenformula.com and after the splash page, on the main menu page go to "modifying my formula" in there you will read how I did my swap from LG4 to TPI.

I did a firebird, if you have a camaro it will e slightly different. But it will give you some idea of what I went through to get it RIGHT.

If you need a dash, I think most V6 dash will work as well. check the plugs on the passenger side for wire colors to where they plug into the engine harness & ECM.

Good luck

John

SINCE you dont have a wire harness, go with an 86-89, or go with a 90 - 92 with Speed density.

I agree with Okfoz. There is very limited information on the eproms for 1985s, which will make getting an eprom should you decide to modify the engine in the future.

If you like MAF, then go the 165 ECM route like 86-89 Thirdgens, else look at SD 7730 ECM.

oh, and why do you think i need another dash, and what exactly do you mean by dash...im assuming gauge cluster...and if thats it do you say i need a new one to hook up to the harness or because you read my other post concerning gauge cluster interchangability?

The wiring harness on the 4BBL & TPI dashes are different. I had to literally remove the entire dash, and use the one from my donor car. Only took me about 5 to 6 hours to do the swap.

I even had an electronic speedo & everything, thats not the problem, I think all your gages will still work, where you will run into problems is the Fuses will be all messed up, and there are some 3-6 extra wires that go from the engine wire harness to the Fuses.

Your gages MIGHT still work if you have the electonic gages. But you might run into some other interesting problems that I personally was not interested in fighting with. (This is NOT a single weekend project)

You do not have to change the dash wireing harness if you don't want to. All that is needed are a dozen or so wires extra needed. See this link for a shetch of the additional wires. I used the factory wiring manual to verfiy this information. I also performed the same swap. E-mail me direct for any specific questions, it's relitively easy if your not scared of wiring.
