Code 36 Anyone??
Ok so I know this isnt exactly the cheapest way to be going about this but with my '86 trans am TPI 5.0 Auto transmission ive been getting an ses light for code 36, Burn off at mass air flow sensor OR Problem in transmission shift OR Fault in direct ignition system OR Missing pulses in electronic spark timing signal, I just finished rewiring the connector for the MAF sensor burnoff relay, replaced the MAF sensor burnoff relay, replaced the MAF and yet im STILL getting this code 36, i just had the transmission rebuilt, so im not so sure its that... the only thing i can think of is possibly i wired the connector wrong? the code only sometimes comes up but it always comes up within 5-10 seconds of the engine running... does anyone have any suggestions? anything would be greatly appreciated!

the TPI board for code 36? This is a pretty common thing for MAF TPI cars. Supreme Member

or just give generic "Code 36 is the burn off and it does this..." every few years these questions need to be answered lol otherwise I'll never find info on it. Thread Starter

Re: Code 36 Anyone??
i dunno if anyone has made this mistake before but i put the MAF burnoff relay where the MAF power relay was supposed to be and vice versa with the MAF power relay and it was causing me a code 36, the second i switched them around the code went away and hasnt come back since...

Re: Won't Idle!!! AT WITS END!
36 MAF sensor burn-off voltage was missing. Check MAF sensor burn-off relay and terminal "D" on MAF
There are two Maf relays one for burn off and one for power.
The power one has heavier contacts for more amperage. It can replace the burn off but not the other way around.
For the $11 az to $14 gm, it good to just replace both. I use the heavier one in both places for ease of trouble shooting.
This Voltage (edit maf burnoff) only happens at key off and for just hot sec.
Won't throw the code till the next start up. So... everytime ya gata unhook battery, to clear the code, then start stop start recheck for C E L
