Effective "emissions" mods?
I may have to (within the next several months) pass CT emissions. Right now I have an 89 Iroc with a 135,000 mile LB9 with bad valve seals, no cat, and air system removed (egr and charcoal intact.) So basically I want to pass emissions without spending too much money or screwing up the car - that's pretty much what I care about. Here are things I'll do for sure:
1) warm the car to at least 210-220 degrees and drive for awhile before the test..etc.
2) full tune up including o2 sensor and oil change.
Now for the questions.
1) A new cat/air injection setup will probably cost more than $200. That's about how much it will cost to get into prom burning. I will definitely do one or the other, but I'd sure like to do the prom method since I want to get into that anyway. Does anyone familiar with burning proms know what kind of results I can get with this method? I might post this over there, but I figure a good deal of the prom burning crowd is also in the tpi crowd...
2) How much does retarding timing (say to 2 degrees btdc) and/or leaning the mixture and messing with idle and things of that sort help? Does anyone have specific advice in this area?
3) >>if all else fails<< What effect will using denatured ethanol have? It seems this works for a lot of people. How should it be mixed with gas, like is 1:1 acceptable or what?
Thanks in advance for any advice or opinions, especially specific info!
