why am I tearing up my AFPR?
why am I tearing up my AFPR?
In case you didn't read my other post, I have torn the diaphram on the FPR twice now. First the stock one and now the holley unit. What could cause this? And in a related question, where exactly does that metal spacer ring go? Between the two seals on the diaphram? thanks
Jim

Jim,
The metal ring with the six holes in it is NOT a spacer. It is a load ring, and is the last thing that goes on the assembly. It sandwiches the spring can between itself and the regulator base. The screws are screwed throough the ring first and the screw heads rest on the ring, not the spring can itself.
The purpose of the ring is to distribute the load of the spring can equally among the screws and prevent the thin edge of the can from distorting and allowing the diaphragm to migrate, tear, and leak. The screws never touch the spring can. Got it?
The photo I have is a bit blurred, but you can see the ring:

thanks, thats probably why I've been ripping the diaphrams, I have been putting the ring on the inside of the assembly between the diaphram. hopefully that will solve the problem.
Vader, I would like to thank you especially, you've been a great help to me with my new project.

Hey Camaroguy,
I've got half a dozen used FPR diaphrames if you need one. They're all in good shape, I bought a whole lot of them to make myself a homemade AFPR so if you need one or two, let me know.

thanks for the offer but I have a holley AFPR and it comes with the internals. I'm sending it back to summit under warrenty so I'll have a brand new unit. Thanks again.

Your aftermarket (adjustable) regulator probably also has a thicker (about 1/8") flange so the load ring is not required, and probably won't even fit over the top.
