Underdrive Question

I've done my due diligence on this subject. I saw the 50/50 split over if they work or not. Honestly, I do not care about the 10 HP I may gain by spending $180 on these pulleys (the ZOOPS set cost $300 or so). My goal is the polished look. The set from ZOOPS probably works for somebody, but not me.

Here's my question. I am going to get the power and amp series as I never got over the trauma of my Fiero discharging when I was a kid. Summit says that set is for automatic transmissions only. I have a T5, why can I not use this set? Along those lines, why could I not just leave the pulley on the alt that it came with?

Thanks again TGO...
Eric

Re: Underdrive Question

I had an 88 formula with the underdrive pulleys. I only put the crank pulley on. I cant tell you any dynomamoter results but it felt a tiny bit stronger. I didnt put the alt pulley on for fear of undercharging but it didnt hurt cooling any although charging seemed a lil weak, i dont see why you couldnt use that set. A SBC is an SBC you know? I personally think it would work fine your call though, good luck!

Re: Underdrive Question

I don't know why I never think of it, but I called Summit and asked one of their tech folks. Man they are good.

He told me that the P&A will work for my manual car, that it's recommended not against the manual, but FOR the auto due to the lower idle RPMs and the "damage" (my word) it can cause to the alt/charging system. I asked him the down side to UD on a street car, he stated the obvious that the charging might otherwise be affected if not for the P&A smaller alt pulley (it is a must), and that my car might get hot while idling in traffic. "Ahh", I said..but I have an Edelbrock high-flow unit and a huge Be Cool radiator already in. He said that would greatly offset the slow waterpump rotation but that I'd need a high-flow thermo, otherwise my kickass WP might give the little Delco unit trouble opening under high RPMs. (ehh..it's $13, so what..)

Hope this helps someone down the road.

Re: Underdrive Question

I installed the Jet pulley kit for my 92. When both the alt and crank were installed, the charge felt weak...especially when the air and lights were on.

The effect was not as bad with the crank only. I did not dyno but it did feel to pull a little harder.
