fuel tank pressuer

Just got my 91 TA (305TPI) tonight. This is my first TPI car.

I notice that it idles fast and sometimes can be a little hesitant of the line. The exhaust puffs a little black at first start up, and the inside of the exhaust tips are very sooty (seems like a constant rich problem).

One thing that I notice is that when I crack the fuel cap when the engine is running, A LOT of hot pressure escapes. Is the evap canister connected to exhaust backpressure somewhere? Can someone give me a good explination of how the evap system works? I noticed on the hood emissions decal that there is a fuel tank pressure regulator right next to the evap canister.

As far as I can tell the engine is completely stock.

Thanks in advance

I'll try to look through my manual tomorrow for you, but as I recall, the tank is vented to the charcoal cannister...gas fumes are supposed to be vented to the cannister instead of out into the air.

Under certain conditions (which I've forgot) the cannister is purged to the TB and any fumes, etc, should be reburnt into the engine.

I've never pulled my gas cap off while the engine is running, not sure if thats normal or not....but I do get a "hiss" of pressure when I remove the cap to fill'er up.
