Crossfire to TPI
First Of All i have a 83 CFI Camaro
has about 400,000 miles on the body
80,000 on engine
ha
Well i dont like the CFI system..
It runs very nicely VERY nice torque and best of all MPG
but Ive been wanting to get rid of it. I dont want Carb. or X Ram
But i want TPI!
Can I use short block?(bottom end)
Can I use stock heads?
Can I use OEM ECM
Can I use with 700r4 not the E version
just
basically what do i need?
i asked on the CF forums but nobody is ever on that one so i wanna see here.
ANd also
I want a way to keep my Tranny in OD
so it can go
1-2-3-4 with no downshift

I think the TPI forum would be a better place for this than the Carburetor forum.

Re: Crossfire to TPI
Yes, possibly yes, probably no (especially for a newbie), yes.
GM changed the angle of intake manifold bolts circa 1987+, so if you use an older TPI intake manifold then it should be a bolt on. Otherwise, for an 87+ manifold, you would need to use a round file and open up the bolt holes in the TPI intake. Do a search and you will find MANY posts on it.
The OEM ECM you have is a circa 83-84 TBI ECM.... so it's not designed to fire 8 injectors of the TPI. It might be theoretically possible (by a very experience DIYer) but for you, the answer is no. You need a newer TPI-specific ECM.
TPI will run a lot like CFI as far as torque and mpg, because CFI is the TBI version of the TPI.... it lacks only port injection. Otherwise it is also an equal-length-tuned intake manifold system, and it was designed by the same people at GM that did TPI. So you may feel a slight increase in torque at a slightly lower engine rpm, and the TPI should allow more power because the runners have a slightly larger cross sectional area, but it won't be significantly different than what you have now and the above list (to mod from CFI to TPI) will be a lot of work, especially for a novice. HTH.
