083 and 193 heads on a 90-92 TPI 350 questions
I tried the TGO search engine(needs improvement) and didn't find what I'm looking for. I have a Jasper remand. 350 longblock with 2K on it from a 91RS that the previous owner put in. I called Jasper to get info on this engine and they say its a stock direct replacement for a TPI engine. When I removed the engine I found that it had 193 heads and I believe a peanut cam. It does have a roller cam and lifters. I believe this is a 94-95 truck engine. If you ever buy a Jasper engine get exact info on every part they install. I also have 2 stock L98s from 91s from f-bodies with 083 heads.
I don't believe the Jasper engine would run correctly with a stock SD TPI intake on it.
Any comments on what this Jasper engine(with a stock 90-92 TPI intake) would run like compared to a stock 90-92 L98 TPI.
Thx. in advance.

Re: 083 and 193 heads on a 90-92 TPI 350 questions
In a literal sense it's not a stock replacement for the TPI -- if it was it would have 083 for the casting number suffix on the heads. That said, the reman engine was probably from a B platform car (193 heads, roller peanut cam), probably a Caprice. The head flow on the 083 isn't markedly different than on the 193: slightly better on the intake, much worse on the exhaust.
The head flow issue on a TPI engine isn't as much of a big deal because the airflow through the TPI is restrictive at almost the same airflow as on the 083 or 193 heads. In fact, if you replace the cam you have, you will find as many other TPI owners have that the power curve on the engine will flatten out from 4500 rpm and up. The hotter the cam, the more you can move the rpm for this, but it will still have a flat power curve at high rpms, because of the TPI design and runner cross section.
As for a comparison with a 90-92 TPI: the exhaust is always the #1 problem if you have a stock exhaust; 2nd on that list is the peanut cam. If you swap the cam to the equivalent of an L98 (probably 773 cam), and you retune the ECM, then you should run nearly the same as the factory stock Fcar L98.
You should also revise the ignition advance to suit the use of the 193 heads --- probably no more than 30 degs advance, because the 193 heads are faster fuel burners than the 083. Your fuel economy might be a whisker better as well because of the 193 & TPI combo. It should run very well for a street-driven car.
Be careful with the trans install you have planned. A TPI 350 using 193 heads will have extremely good torque and the torque is what will kill a T5 if you abuse it. HTH.

Re: 083 and 193 heads on a 90-92 TPI 350 questions
When Jasper told me this was a TPI stock replacement I jump their A_ _es about selling a TBI truck or Caprice as a TPI stock replacement due to the 193 heads and the peanut cam not being correct for a 87-92 TPI stock engine.
The 91 GTA I'm building is going to be all stock and used for touring not a straight line racer. With that said the L98 and WC T5 will be fine for what I'm looking to do with it.
I'm going to sell the 2K Jasper TBI truck engine and use the money to rebuild the stock L98 I have and make it correct.
kdrolt, Thx for the input.
