Fuel Pressure Questions

I have a Crane adjustable fuel pressure regulator on my 355 TPI. First off, why does it cost 60 bucks for just a cover? I thought I was going to get the entire regulator. Secondly, are you supposed to check fuel pressure with the vacuum line connected or disconnected? And does it matter if the engine is running or if it's just turned to "On"? Anyways, when I try to check my fuel pressure, right after I start the car up, the pressure goes way up to like 55 PSI, then drops immediately to around 46-48 PSI, then slowly drops to around 36-38 PSI, where it stays. I know it's not a bad fuel pump because I have tried pinching off the return line, and the pressure shoots way up, telling me the pump can put out quite a bit of pressure. There are also no fuel leaks anywhere. Lastly, when changing the entire regulator, not just the cover, do you have to remove the fuel rail or can I just do the plenum? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, AFPRs are a rip off considering you can make one yourself for less than a $. Vader has a tech article on how to do it if you would have done a search on the boards first.

You check/set your FP with the car running and the vacuum line disconnected. Your observation of the pressure peaking and then dropping a bit after it primes when you turn the key is normal.

Not sure, i didn't really look that close last time i had the plenum off to see if the reg assembly can be had off w/o removing the rail. I doubt it though.

It is easiest if you remove the entire rail, unless you like using a lot of profane langauge!
