building a mild 383

ok heres the plan,
i have an L98 in my garage and i wana make it into a 383. im kinda tight on cash right now, so i will be keeping the stock TPI stuff (ported of course) i am also planing on reusing the iron L98 heads too, how much would a good machine shop charge for a full porting job and a 3 angle valve job? i will probably pick up a cheap 383 kit from Northern auto parts, the only thing im unsure about is the cam. i dont know much about cams and their specs, could sombody explain to me what different specs on cams effect performance. i should be able to get mid to low 13s on this easily right? i just wana show those LT-1 punks whats up when i beat them w/ a 305

I was thinking of a mild way of doing it. But I'm the person who wants 600+. Heres one way... going with that SDPC intake use some vortec heads (they're pretty cheap, look at other thread) get a little work done. Your already using the TPI system. Upgrade your injectors and buy a cheap 383 (summit, one you've choosen) and then get a mild cam. Nothing where you can hear it... then go stomp some people. But if you run low 13's I don't believe anyone would believe it's a 305.

Im doing the same thing with my L98 want to turn it into 383 its a 350 right now. I got the LT4 Hot cam kit. I thinking of fastburn heads or the vortec, but I know there is work involved with both these heads.

well i was thinking of the vortechs, however the over priced intake base is turnning me off that option. and about the low 13s on a 305.... they wont know it runs low 13s will they?

89FormulaL98,

I have an extra 383 reciprocating assembly here that I'd sell pretty cheap... It consists of a newly reconditioned cast stroker crank, some 400 short rods (visually inspected), some .030 over forged speedpro pistons (coated with Techline coatings), a stock 400 balancer, and an SFI approved B&M flexplate. I also have an extra 4-bolt main block that has been magnafluxed. I tore the whole motor down, then decided to go forged on everything. (Darned project creep!!)

Email me if interested. I'm in Lansing, MI area.

I wouldnt spend the cash on to have the stock heads done you can almost buy a good set of heads for what it will cost to have them worked heare a three angle vale job is 150 having the spring seats cut for bigger springs is 75 and port jobs can run from 100 to 600 depending on what you want.I seen you had asked some ? at the sdpcbase gruop perchas i woldnt totaly throw the vortecs aside yet you can get a set from the junk yard for 200 have a three angle valve job done to them have the spring seats cut and have heads that will flow better then the stock heads ported and yuo can always do a port job your self if you have a dremal or air grinder their ar lots of tech articals telling you how to do this even with the expensive base you still will have less then 1000 in to it most of us have just this in are heads I can tell you how to modify the base you already have as well to work if you want to save a little cash.
