Early Tuned Port

For those on a budget here is a picture of an early Tuned Port induction system in the pre-production phase. This one will appeal to the carb types more than the computer guys. So for consideration here is a picture.

That would be the Looooooong tube runner design.

I don't even see a fan behind that radiator. Those side pipes must be brutally loud.

That looks pretty close to the length of the TPI runners if you straightened them out and stood them up like that. The part of the runner hidden in the intake is as long as the curved part if not longer.

Re: Early Tuned Port

Chrysler did a lot better with their early '60s Cross-Ram and two AFBs, and kept it all under a closed hood. Of course, they couldn't drive around playing their favorite Civil Defense warnings or advertising for ice cream vending to all the neighbors through the "scoop." That's a classic, right there.

And to think that Chevy is making twice the HP with the LS7 at almost 30 MPG, in a nice, trim package. Gotta love evolution. I wonder if the Mopar cavemen are still clinging to that. It certainly seems so if you watch their advertisements.

Re: Early Tuned Port

I beleive thats an old Ramchargers set-up right there. Back when they were experimenting with tuned length runners. Ramchargers are still around, too. I think I remember someone actually talking about the development of those set-ups in a car mag or forum or somethin'

Re: Early Tuned Port

You are correct about the Ramchargers and the car. There are some pretty famous people in the industry associated with that car.

Re: Early Tuned Port

The factory had this in 1958, so all the "experimentation" was already done:

Is that early enough for you?

Re: Early Tuned Port

What RPM range did that cross-ram set-up peak at? Those manifolds look like their length is in the TPI LTR range, or longer. -Bill

Re: Early Tuned Port

For the 1959 Dodge 413 Wedge Block with Crossram, horsepower tested at 289 (Later they "corrected" the horsepower to 303 hp at 4,400 RPM and "corrected" torque to 464 lb-ft at only 3,000 ROM). No, that wasn't a typo - 289 HP from 413 cubes. Sound familiar?
