idling prob. w/TA

new Trans AM owner (305 TPI, Flowmaster, headers, posi).Love the car, but having a prob. When car's in drive, sitting at a stop, idles real rough & surging. Have tried adjusting throttle body sensor, timing & checked alternator. What am I missing?

hows the 'tune' of the engine? stuck EGR?
plugs? wires? fuel pressure? does the system
go into closed loop? ya gotta wide range of
symtoms with many different causes.
basics:
1. air and fuel
2. compression
3. spark
those three are the keys to an engines performance.
have a power balance test done to determine
if one or more cylindess are contributing to
the roughness.
since it is new.. i always change the oil, filters
and plugs. compression check the cylinders.
thatll give me a baseline for anything that
might come up.

surging at idle could be any of the things already mentioned, or it also could be a vacuum leak somewhere. to check for vacuum leaks i spray a small amount of starting fluid in quick squirts around the intake, if the idle changes drastically, then you have a leak. be carefull with the starting fluid though, too much can be bad. just use quick small squirts.

I tend to agree with the vacume leak, hows your brakes, is your booster leaking? I would start with checking for a vacume leak.
