What can I replace my 165 ECM with?

I'm still having intermittent ECM issues, with my second 165 ECM. I thought I read that a 445 ECM will work, but is it plug and play? I know I could re-pin the connector and switch to speed density, but I'm trying to avoid wiring modification for now. Are there any other ECMs that would be better (read: more reliable) than the 165 or 445? The car is an 88 GTA with 305TPI.
