hmm, i thought aluminum didnt rust..

Well, i took my intake plenum up to the car wash today, high pressure washed out just the plenum, and now porting part of it, and i notice rust in the inside only, and on the gasket surface, HOW do i get rid of this? what is causing it? i thought aluminum didn't rust. I used tap water also once i got home to flush out the shavings, and prayed some sort of Green Cleaner, and Carb cleaner in side of it, what is causing the rust.

Aluminum cannot rust, however it can corrode, my guess is that the cleaner you are using is too caustic, (maybe it has some kind of acid in it)and is reacting with the aluminum, my beust guess for removing whatever it is, would be maybe soaking it in some kind of aluminum wheel cleaner like eagle one etc..

The brown stuff is not rust. It is the result of EGR and PVC gasses coating the inside of the plenum as they pass through to be burned. Since TPI is a "dry" intake, there is no gasoline running through the plenum and runners that would normally clean out these deposits.

The coating really doesnt hurt much, and carb/fi cleaner works fine to get it off.

If the Green Cleaner is Simple Green, DO NOT USE!! It permanetly tarnishes the finish! Therek was a post a while back on the appearance board (I think) about someone using it on their wheels & it ruined them. I ruined my nice Aluminum Wiesco Valve Covers too using that crap!

I use brake cleaner and an old toothbrush to clean parts when disassembled.

i was suprised on well carb cleaner did to clean it out, i tried engine degreaser, soaking it in dish soap, high pressure washing. that did nothing, took a simple can of carb cleaner and magic, all the carbon went away.
