setting timing
setting timing
what would be a good setting to put my timing at on an 88 Trans Am w/ 305 TPI...all stock except for flowmaster cat-back.....also, what direction do i turn the distributer....i'm not good w/ doing timing and i don't want to screw it up...i just heard by advancing the timing a little it can pick you up a little more speed...thanks

I would set it to 9 degrees.
You have to disconnect a black/tan wire at the passager firewall and then loosen the distributor screw and turn it I believe anti clock vise.
Make sure you get a timing light to double check your timing mark. You might have to clean that tab off, they can get ugly.
Just make sure you clean all the codes before you take off. You should feel a little difference in throttle response and should get better mileage too.
Good luck.

I break the tan and black connector on the passenger side firewall. I set my ZZ4 timing at 10 BTDC or maybe a hair more. To advance the timing rotate the distributor counterclockwise, to retard - go the other way.

Hey,
I'm running flat-top pistons and 72CC chamber heads. My compression ratio is only like 9.5:1. Most people running big motors are running like 10:1 or 11:1. I was planning on
running a blower at one point, so I didn't go
with the 64CC chambers.
