What is the problem with my car.

I installed the new engine last week and I have had nothing but problems. Here are the symtoms.

1) When I go to set the timing this is what happens. I pull the EST wire loose and set base timing. When I reconect the EST wire It does not advance untill I shut the engine off and start it again.

2) When I go to set idle I jump the A&B terminals wait a minute and then disconect the IAC and adjust the idle to 900 by way of the throttle screw. After idle is reached I set the TPS and then hook the IAC back up and turn off the key. I have also tried setting the TPS after the I have hooked up the IAC. Either way I do this after the key is turned off and turned back on the idle goes were ever it wants to anyware from 1250 to 2000rpm. No matter what I do the end result is still the same.

3) When I take the car and put the tranny in to a gear the rpm will drop to almost nothing and die.

4) I have tried to set the TV cable a couple of different ways and I can't seem to get the tranny to shift correctly.

5) The car will not pull past 3k without boging like the ignition is not advancing.

6) The car has no *****.

If you have any ideas please help.

Here is a list of the parts that I have recently replaced and my mods.

distributor and ignition module
cap and rotor
plugs and wires
MAF and relays (blown out by backfire through intake)
ECU

Hey man,

Thats normal. From a programmers point of view, it probably does not have a loop to check if the wire had ever been reconnected.

All your other symptoms lead me to believe your MAF is either screwed up, or the green wire fell out. Ive actually diagnosed this problem on more than one TPI car. Car won't rev beyond like 3500, just studders, has no
power, idle acts like a vacume leak, etc.

I replaced the MAF and the relays the other day I didn't notice that any of the wires were loose. I will check for that wire loose. How many wires should there be coming from the MAF harness. I am also going to change the 30# injectors to 24# for right now so I can see if that was the problem. But if anyone has anyother ideas please post them.

I set my base idle to like 600 rpm.
I think your intial idle is so high that it has the ecm confused.
Also explains your other problems

I agree with grumpy... setting your idle at 900RPM without te aid of the IAC is way too high... Who told you to do it this way? The best way is to hook your car to a Diagnostic Computer and adjust your throttle plates until the IAC Valve is running at the proper range.

Do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator? If so... instead of changing the injectors, set your pressure lower.

I just got my scaner back about an hour ago. What is the correct range for the IAC? I tried to set the idle to 600rpm earlyer today and the car did the same thing.

Question: Would an intake leak cause the same symtoms as I have described?
