Weird starting problem
Weird starting problem
I have been searching through the other starting problems on this forum and I can't see anything that helps me so I will state my problem and ask my question. I have a 1989 GTA with the TPI 350 and it only starts when it want's to. When it does start it turns over 5 or 6 times and just kind of stumbles into a start. If it won't start at all I can pull the fuse for one of the injector banks and it will start after the second flop just like it should. Replace the fuse and it runs perfect. I checked the fuel pressure today and it was about 41psi with the key in the run position. It dropped to about 32psi when it is running. Why does this thing start perfect with half of the injectors shut off? Is it a fuel problem or some kind of electrical issue?

Re: Weird starting problem
If one injector is bad, it'll make the whole side stop working. You need at least 40 psi of fuel pressure for a TPI car to run properly. I'm willing to bet that you have a leaking injector.
Re: Weird starting problem
I have about 42 psi when I turn the key to on and have about 32psi when it is running at an idle. There is red RTV all over the fuel pressure regulator where the two halves come together and they used the same RTV to put the injectors back in. It is all over the injectors where they go into the intake. Some people should never work on cars.

Re: Weird starting problem
32psi running is a too low for these cars (it will run that low,but not like it should) with pressure gage hooked up turn key to the on and let the fuel system prime, then turn key off and see if it falls, if it falls more than a few Lbs in about a min. something is leaking, But start with the fuel pressure, get it to where it needs to be.
Re: Weird starting problem
I can let the gauge sit there for an hour and it will never go under 40psi with the car not running. This car is starting to look like I will never get it right. I am going to throw injectors and a new adjustable regulator on it and see what it does. I have a scanner on the way so I will be able to read everything. I won't know what it means but I am hoping some one here can read it and tell me what is up. If there is some one close to me I would be willing to pay you to look at the car and give me some ideas. I will not pay the dealer to work on my car.
