How do I know if I have a remote coil?
I was aksed by the guy at Summit of if I have a remote coil or the coil on top of the distributor onmy 91 Formula 350...I looked under the hood and I see an ignition wire coming out from under the plenum extension to what looks like a coil...I know this sounds obvious, but I thought that the coil was always to mounted? Thanks for the help.
I believe your car came stock with a remote coil, but you shouldn't count on it still running the stock set-up. A sure way to tell would be to take off your plenum extension, by was of the 3 small torx bolts up top, and look at the distributer itself. A distributer with a remote coil will have 9 leads coming off of the top of it, one for each cylinder and one in the middle for the coil. A distributer with a integrated coil won't have the center lead, but instead it will have a rather large box type unit mounted in its place, that's the coil. Hope this helps.
Check out my website. Picture of remote coil there.
