Engine buildup questions, need opinions

alright guys, this is gonna be fun

A buddy of mine has some cash to spend..like $2500 on an engine build up. He has an L98 now, which needs to be rebuild, he's getting a rebuild package for it. Not sure exactly what he's getting in it, but i know it will have the typical .30 over pistons and all that stuff.

Well he's asked me and another friend to come up with some buildup ideas.

He's already going with a T-56, its our job to help with the engine

This is the setup i was thinking of.

-Vette L98 aluminum heads, some minor portwork.
-LT4 hotcam package w/1.6 rockers(if needed)
-Edlebrock base, ported if needed
-SLP runners
-Port the **** out of his plenum
-pete jackson "quiet" gear drive

He's lookin at low 13's or high 12's N/A, which i feel this combo could get him there with no problem. As far as the ignition and stuff he'll get that...the chip we'll do(or at least try) and the tranny he's getting

I'd be able to stay within that $2500 budget for that motor buildup right? i don't see it going over that

Just wanted some opinions, other suggestions will be appreciated

I dunno, after the parts you've listed, you'll only have about a 1000-1100 left over for machine work and incidentals (hoses, belts, waterpump, gasket kits, etc...might be close??

the L98 is in his GTA, the belts accessories etc he already has...sorry i forgot to mention that..also the machine work will only be around $300 since he knows someone that can give him a deal...i'm just concerned with the performance of this setup. Oh yeah another concern is this...he has a set of hooker shorty headers, IF he was to go with the alum. L98 heads would he have a big problem getting to the spark plugs? If so what headers would u recommend?(and DON'T say SLP's )

Ditch the 'Vette heads, there are better options for not much more $.

The small-port TFS 23deg heads are particularly well suited to TPI and have better flow and swirl characteristics.

If you don't mind iron, straight spark plugs, and changing intakes you can go with Vortec heads and the SDPC TPI intake for close to what the TFS heads cost.

Can't help you on header/plug issues with the Al heads, but also consider the price of the rebuild kit too.

Re: the accessories/belts/hoses, unless they're really fresh, nows the time to replace them....never a good ideas to put old parts on a new engine.

Also, 12's may require more injector than the stock 22lb's could provide, and more than likely they need to be replaced/cleaned, etc, anyway.

Sounds like he's getting a great deal on the machine work, I don;t think I could get a set of heads gone through for that pirce

i was also thinking that, cause i like the vortec heads, but my concern is will the vortec heads be able to support the lift of the LT4 hotcam?

also i forgot, probably a 52MM TB, also, which is better? the accel or edlebrock base? they're both the same aren't they?

About the injectors, not sure about the stockers, maybe 22#'s will be enough...if not, 24#'s will be fine.
