Keeping TPI, Vortec or Fast Burn's
I have been searching the archives for info on this topic and have seen hundreds of posts and I guess I am more confused now. I have a '88 350 w/L98 heads and I am building up a 355ci with 9.5:1 compression, 4-bolt mains, hyperneutetic pistons, all balanced and blue printed. I am wanting to keep my TPI system and I am aware I might have to buy the SDPC TPI intake which is fine but... which heads should I go with? I want to make around 350HP, if more, thats cool. Will the SDPC intake work with both Vortec and Fast Burn heads. I saw on their website they had a basically all stock 350 L98 motor with new Vortec heads and their new TPI base intake pushing around 360HP. This sounds like the combo I want but is the $500 extra for getting into the Fast Burns worth it? I am wanting to go with a complete roller valve train and a hyd. roller cam of some sort, maybe a Hot Cam but not sure yet. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

read my posts in the "after market product review" section on "fast burn heads", "1bad91Z", I think TimmyZ had a motor intake, cam combo post, they should give you an idea on a good TPI combo.

Thanks for the info 1bad91Z! That post is a wealth of info. The Fast Burns definitly sound good. I was wondering what intake I would have to get in order to keep my TPI? Would my TPI let the heads breath enough?

You would need to get a Scoggin-dickey vortec TPI intake base. www.sdpc2000.com
This intake will bolt up properly to the fastburns and vortec heads. It also out-flows all of the standard style aftermarket TPI intakes!

G.M. Fast Burn heads are drilled for both vortec style and earlier 6-bolt style intakes. I think a factory TPI intake would bolt right up to the Fast Burn heads.

It may bolt up, but remember that the vortec and fastburn heads have raised intake runners. Sometimes there isn't enough material on the top of the port in the manifold to seal on the head. I would get the one made for those heads and avoid problems, but i've heard of a few people making a stock type inake work.

Fast burns no doubt...they are some awesome heads, to further enhance them I would smooth the ports and blend the bowls (not taking a lot of metal out) remember heads are what makes the sucker run!!

rock - check out the Topics that I posted in aftermarket product review on "fast-burns" and "e-tec heads". I've done "ALOT" of research on cylinder heads, you may benefit from it.
Read the topics in aftermarket review. You make a lot of good points. I am still learning when I speak (aren't we all?), but from what I can gather from flow numbers I have seen, the FB's DO outflow the E-Tec's...on the intake side, but the exhaust side is a whole 'nother story. I used Edelbrock and Jim Pace websites for the flow numbers. One thing I also like about the E-Tec's is that they ARE just like Vortecs. That's why I like them. Wouldn't you just LOVE to pick up a set of aluminum vortecs? Also, I like the fact that the intake runner cc is a little smaller on the ETec 200's than the FB's. That would promote a little more velocity of the charge and hence a little more low end torque. In the end though, people are just asking our advice. My money says that Chevyguy 1969 is gonna but what he is gonna buy, (probably Vortecs if he is a poor college student....don't worry dude, I am too
), your gonna buy what your gonna buy (based on what I am reading...FB's),and I am gonna buy E-Tec's. Hopefully WE WILL ALL BE HAPPY WITH OUR PURCHASES.
Case closed.

Case closed. ummm why go wild on exhaust numbers?
if you are super/turbo-charged thatd be an
issue.
another issue is valvetrain.
lighter components are more desired. less rolling
resistance means less drag and more effiency.
and on upper rpms this is very cruical.
stainless is a fine valve material, but the
hollow titanium is lighter. just as durable.
one piece valves are heavy and at 6000+rpm
to keep the valve float to minimums heavy
spring pressure is needed. this isnt too good
on valve seats. just an observation.
