Piston rings?

I will be pullling my TPI intake(pita) and heads to change a head gasket i want to know how do you know if your pistons are up for re-ringing?

gotta do a compression/leakdown test, I am not sure if U can tell just by lookin, because the top lands pretty much cover any view.
