5.7 upgrade help
5.7 upgrade help
Hello everyone. I have done some searching here and have found a LOT of upgrade info. However, while I do want more power from my car I also want to keep it as close to stock as possible. My uncle ordered it special from GM and now I have it. It is a 1989 IROC-Z 5.7 with factory upgrades including, alum drive shaft, dual cats, and the performance rear. It sat for about 1 1/2 years uncovered outside until he past away and I got it. Other than that abuse it is never seen salt and was garaged up till that time span. Now its back in a garage and clean. Paint is hurting a little. Here is what I have down.
New K&N filters, fuel filter, thermostat, fresh anti freeze, oil and filter change, plugs, wires, distro cap and button, fresh oil in the rear end, and I have the filter and oil to do a fresh change on the tranny at some point soon. I have had to do other minor things like getting the temp gauge to work and the rear hatch is still giving me fits.
So now the question is, since I have done the basic tune up what can I do to add more power without getting away from stock to much. This baby only has about 65,000 miles on it and is completely stock. The exhaust will need work, the muffler is shot. If I went with a cat back or a complete system would that take away the value of being stock? Now I know most of these cars arnt really big dollar collectors items, but I figured if it is stock why change it.
Thanks for your time.

Re: 5.7 upgrade help
Just like you I also want to keep my IROC stock. It is a 1987 IROC and I have done just about the same things to mine as you have too yours. One word of advice is I went with the Dynomax cat back system from Sumitt.
It sounds is nice and mellow not really loud.
Ask around on the board and you will hear plenty of feed back. Good luck with you IROC.
