FUEL PUMP ISSUE
FUEL PUMP ISSUE
Guys,
I've gone through at least 2 fuel pumps and 2 fuel pressure regulators in just over a year. Just last week I installed another one. Here's the issue: After about 10 minutes of driving the fuel pump begins to hum. Now, if I take the car on a 20 to 30 mile trip it really hums loudly and the car will stop running until it is cool. My mechanic, after checking pressure, amps output and fuel lines has determined that my muffler is too close to the gas tank/shield. So, today, I'm having the muffler dropped just a bit to see if that will make a difference. Anyone experience anything like this before? I have a 1988 GTA with flowmaster catback exhaust. Thanks

Re: FUEL PUMP ISSUE
Sounds like he's grasping at straws. The gas cools the pump, so that seems very unlikely. I'd guess either you have a crimped/bent/restrictive line somewhere or the mechanic is doing something wrong when he installs it. Perhaps the suction line is split causing the pump to suck air. That will kill it quickly. I'd take it to someone else.

Re: FUEL PUMP ISSUE
I had the exact same problem and so did a friend of mine, we both ended up replacing the fuel pump and started keeping the fuel level above half a tank so the liquid would keep the pump cool while it runs.

Re: FUEL PUMP ISSUE
Thanks JV9999 and GM4lyfe. I'm driving the car today after having the muffler dropped a little and so far I haven't heard the humming sound that I heard before. Again, thanks for your input
