305 dying, build or buy shortblock and what heads?
Thinking its getting about time to give up on hitting the ole 305 with spray and start working on getting a 350 built for the car. 305's starting to make a little racket which makes me nervous since there has probably been 25 bottles of nitrous through it.
This whole operation will be on a tight budget, and I've heard a lot of people beat the dead horse on this board about how 305's suck, and to build one is a complete waste of money so lets hear some opinions.
What heads should I run? Decent performing heads that are moderately priced to say the least. I most definitely don't want to build a nice 350 and put 305 heads on it. Thought about Pro-Comps but what will I have to do about headers since I have round port style headers??
Already got a Crane Powermax 2032, LS2 lifters, Timing chain, HP oil pump, and gaskets. I also have a used set of Speed Pro .030 over forged pistons with minimal skirt wear and a set of rods for a 350. Debating finding a crank and a roller block and having the motor built locally, or buying a crate short block. Anyone know of a decent priced roller short block??
Help me get out on a budget guys, I've heard that dead horse beat a million times so prove to me its worth building a 350 for a few extra bucks than to build this 305 and keep running low 8's in the eighth mile.

Heard that 305's are junk on this board since day 1, and no body can come up with a budget 350 setup to compete with it?
I know someone can, this is just more or less a bump.

If you wanna build a 305 go ahead man but......
GMPP 350cid 4 bolt blocks= $750.oo through Summit
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
Several different Rotating assemblies with different prices $650 Cast internals up to $1900 all forged
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...8&autoview=sku
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
Your always gonna have to spend good $$$ on heads..... take your pick.

I don't think you understood what I am trying to say. I want to build a 350, so give me advise on what heads to put on it that are budget worthy and will work with my headers that I already have. I do not want to build a 305!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 305 dying, build or buy shortblock and what heads?
Wow ...... For someone that wants everybody else to do his homework for him your pretty testy.......
Some would say do a
but I'm not gonna do that to a guy that doesn't know what he's doin........
I've already given some staight forward examples ie:
1) zz4 bare block $750.oo
2) Eagle Rotating Assembly 355ci $650.oo (good to 500Hp)
Now as far as heads are concerned the choices are almost endless.....
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku $325.oo each for 2.02/1.60" valves with 165cc intake port... Great torque head considering that cam is good till 5500 RPM and you TPI dies at 4800RPM
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku & your already looking at over $1000.oo the 180 cc intake port will breathe @ the expense of port velocity....
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku $830 for the pair OUCH...
Has all the right stuff though. I would consider going with the 305 S/R Torquers though http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku or shave the deck of these to raise the compression
Anyway you look at it Heads are expensive..... and if your gonna shell out a $1000.oo or more you might as well go aluminum. Try to stick with something in the smalller intake runner size 170cc being optimal for a stock TPI in my opinion. If you go much bigger than that you'll have a dog with poor throttle response that is a pain to drive around town. If you plan on swapping the original TPI (that chokes out around 4800 RPM), for something that inhales easier... go with a bigger intake port, keep in mind your cam characteristics.
By the way, it won't be cheaper to rebuild heads or a block that you may find because you get nickled and dimed into the poor house anyway..... You won't rebuild a head for $400.oo each
and a worked over block will cost $1200 or more and it'll probably be a 2 bolt main...
So for around 2200.oo bucks your rockin
So much for this game being cheap.... But remember for all that you have a rock solid block with a 4 bolt main, a new rotating assembly with forged rods, and brand spankin new heads that won't smoke for the next 12 years
.....
and piece of mind.

Re: 305 dying, build or buy shortblock and what heads?
I wasn't being testy man, and trust me, I've done plenty of homework on this setup. Already considered the Summit heads, but I don't know about them. Also considered Pro Comp, I've got their 320cc heads on a big block 462, but it has yet to come together yet (slow *** machinist) and I've heard good and bad things about their small block heads.
I appreciate the reply, I was just looking for some suggestions and advise, not trying to get you to do my homework for me.
Thanks again.

Re: 305 dying, build or buy shortblock and what heads?
Since you make power through your cylinder heads why don't you spend the cash and go aluminum???
Edelbrock makes SBC heads with 60cc combustion chambers for increased Tq/Hp and have 165cc intake runners....
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
I would just hate to think that you'd do all the work and spend lots of $$$ and leave something on the table........ But I know there's always a budget...
I bought the S/R 305 heads 3 years ago and spent the rest of the time buying up other parts for my engine a little at a time.... so I know what it's like to work on a budget.
Unfortunately, over the 3 years plans changed and I decided to go with a better breathing intake which caused me to reconsider the smaller S/R heads, so I steped up to the AFR Eliminator 180's.......... there goes the budget again. Not that I'm complaining
