Mass Air Flow Sensors
So the Wells type MAF sensor I got back in April 2008 failed the tap test yesterday. I was also getting the SES light coming on a lot. Codes indicated a failed MAF sensor and the car running rich. So I, lucky, got a replacement MAF sensor at no cost from my local auto parts store. I went back to the Bosch MAF sensor. While those Wells type MAF sensors may flow more air they tend to set off the SES light, so I think I will stick with Bosch from now on. I also notice you really shorten the life of the MAF sensor by removing the screens. I had removed the screen from the Bosch MAF sensor I had before I got the Wells type.
The car is running excellent now. Over the last year I have done the following to the engine:
• New FMR 19lbs/hr fuel injectors, Holley AFPR, Holley airfoil, cleaned and ported plenum, runners and intake manifold and Fel Pro gaskets
• Sealed all air induction vacuum leaks and new bushings in stock throttle body
• New IAC valve, EGR valve and EGR thermostat, Bosch MAF sensor, and heated Bosch O2 sensor
• New computer
• New MSD distributor cap and rotor
• New ignition control module
• New Bosch duel electrode spark plugs; and
• New fuel pump relay.
The engine is a new replacement engine from GM with about 35,000km on it.

I also noticed shortened life spans when removing the screens. I replaced my old one with a bosch last year. But instead of removing the screens I just bought a SLP cold air set up lol
