Pre 85 Block, 87+ TPI, what heads ?

I did a search but couldn't get the actual info that I was looking for.

I have a pre 85 SBC crate motor, its a 290hp one (about 5000k on it) and I am using a 87-92 TPI setup.

What are some good/decent heads to use that are going to give me good performance and HP increase but nothing crazy.

I was told vortec, but the intake won't fit, I was told some L-98 but same thing.............I'm a little confused....

I am going to get a complete Comp Cam set up (cam, rockers etc).

The TPI was built by Arizona Speed and Marine

Educate a newb a little if you could.

Thanks

Re: Pre 85 Block, 87+ TPI, what heads ?

The 87+ TPI intake bolt pattern is different, to fit 87+ heads. The four middle intake bolts go in at a steeper angle than pre-87. Vortec heads have a totally different bolt pattern, all intake bolts go straight down, and there aren't any middle intake bolts if I remember correctly. So 87+ L98 heads would work fine, including the aluminum ones from a vette.

So if I am looking for a "new" solution, what would I be "asking" for as far as heads. L98 ?

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, but 87 and up L98. Actually any non-vortec, non-LT1 87 and up heads should work. Edelbrock does make a TPI lower intake for vortec heads, but it's around $400.

world products makes an sr torquer head for 87-up. that was the reason I searched around for an 85-86 intake, so that I couldf put virtually any set of heads I wanted on it.

Cheers!!!
