Two exciting gas tank questions
Hi guys
Just pulled my gas tank (sucky job) to change the pump, and I have two questions.
My filler neck is loose in the tank, enough you can twist it, and it's obviously been leaking. What's up with that, and is there a fix?
Whats that little round plastic doodad about the size of a fuel pressure regulator that's part of the line bundle coming out of the tank by the driver's side frame rail? It had a rubber line on it and was mounted to the rear brake line bracket. It broke in half when I tried to get the line off. Whats it do?
Thanks.

Re: Two exciting gas tank questions
Figured one out. The doodad appears to be a little valve and charcoal canister that keeps the gas smell under control as the tank vents.
Still like suggestions as to the filler neck.

Re: Two exciting gas tank questions
You may be able to find a radiator shop that repairs fuel tanks that can handle the filler neck.
Mine wasn't totally broken, but it would leak when fully filled. I just replaced the tank with a new one.
After you get the tank fixed, don't let the fuel tank neck support the weight of the fuel pump nozzle. This is especially true if the nozzles have a vapor return system. I think this is the cause of the tank neck joint failing and causing leaks.

Re: Two exciting gas tank questions
I know you can buy the necks seperatly, so it could probably be welded on.
However, welding on the gas tank I am sure takes a lot of precausions that I am not aware of.
My neck was damaged from what it looked like the previous owner took off with the gas nozzle at the pump still attached. Any time I filled the car up past half way, I'd have gas running down the side of the car... I had no ambition of screwing with the neck, so I just got a whole new tank at NAPA (I agree the tank removal/install is a sucky job). The plus I believe most if not all the aftermarket tanks come with the slosh bucket in them if your car did not originally come equiped.

The only precaution is to fill the tank with water. This removes all gas odors that could ignite.

I got kinda lucky and a friend had a nice used tank for 50 bucks. It's all back together now.
What a relief.
