Whats the deal with Aluminum & Plastic distributor covers ?

Why do some T.P.I. engines have Aluminum distributor covers and then others have plastic ?
I'm reffering to the piece that matches and continues the upper plenum and is on top of the distributor !

Mine car is a 91 Trans Am convertible with a 305 TPI, its all original and I just aquired it from the original owner and my cover is Aluminum.

I could be wrong, but I believe Firebirds and Camaros came factory with plastic while Corvetts came factory with Alum. Its possible yours has been changed at somepoint.
