383 opinions

Hi Everyone,
I've been searching thru the TGO archives and read many posts. However, none were exactly what I was looking for. I'm getting ready to pull my 350 (see sig) and tranny. I'm debating about having the engine bored to a 355 or stroking it to a 383.

My questions is, if I decide to go the 383 route, will my existing setup (XFI268 cam, large tube runners, etc) be sufficient for a motor that is quick yet still offers exceptional low & midrange torque? I'm not concerned with the strip or going 5000+ RPM.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: 383 opinions

That cam is very similar to mine. It was ground for my 350. It's now in my 383 with the same intake and runners.
Is it sufficient? Yes. Could my engine be happier with a different cam? Most likely. I have a bit more duration at .050 intake lift...224/230 i/o 218/224.

Street driving with automatic trans and highway gears, the 383 will be great. If you had a 5 or 6 speed trans and needed to go all-out at the track then you'd have to upgrade many of the parts for the combination.

Re: 383 opinions

If you're keeping those same 180cc heads then leave it as a 355. If you're upgrading the heads too, then it might be worth it. Spending the money on a 383 that makes the same power as a 350 would be embaressing.
