Air Flow Meter

so my airflow meter went and i got a new one, pluged it in and now the car wont even run....i am assuming the new MAF is bad however i was told that you have to disconnect the battery to reset the computer when changing this part....i trust the person who told me this but i just want a little conformation on it

I didn't disconnect the battery, but It won't hurt if you do.

Re: Air Flow Meter

Any time u replace any electronics its best to take the negative cable off the battery. That could have killed the new. On the other hand to reset take the negative off for about 15 minutes. My bmw did the same stuff. Took the negative off for a while then it started right up. got it home to replace the mafs

Re: Air Flow Meter

it still runs if i plug the old on in, it just throws high circut and low circut codes (code 33,34) and runs like crap, it won't even run with the "new", i say "new" because its a used one, but it came off of a running car

That's strange. Well in your case, I would get a book if u dont already have one. Find every thing in the circuit, & how to test them. A code is not ment to tell you the exact part to change. It does at least tell you the circuit that has been feeding the computer a code. I would start with your new, & old part first since it runs but dont run with the other. The new could have shorted, while the old is bad, but not as bad. Then Find out how to test the computer. Hope that helps.

Re: Air Flow Meter

ive done the testing and i have just come to conclusion that the "new" one is completely shot, and the old one is shot but not shot enough to stop it from running, so its time to get another

Oh cool. Makes it easy. I wouldn't take the chance with a new one, & take the ground off the battery. Let us know how it turns out.

Re: Air Flow Meter

ok so i got it running but i still have the SES light once it crosses into open loop....i guess i have to double check everything......but it does run a whole lot better so i don't know...right now im a little frustrated with it.......also i do have a chip in but only because my car runs at about 150-160, could that affect what im dealing with?

On the chip ya it could cause some trouble. how long have you had it in, has the light been on ever since, or around the time you put the chip in? was it tuned to your car, or just an off the shelf chip? It could be that, or your car could need some time to recognize the changes. It does take a while from what I remember reading. Wana say anywhere from 30-80 miles. But not for sure. does your new part have a warranty? If so then drive it for a 100 miles or so with no worries. If its not good by then, suspect your chip. Everyone I have ever seen on here talking about the chip said to custom burn one. On the other hand if their is no warranty then you may want to wait for someone else that knows more about it. Most of us car guys hate electronics.

Re: Air Flow Meter

i bought the car with the chip in it, so its been coming on since i bought the car, i do however have the stock chip too. its a hypertech for temp adjustment, and thats all its for. i'll have to drive the car to work on monday and see what happens (60 miles round trip). trying to save money i got another "new" part, if this doesn't work i will have to but a NEW one and see if that does it, i hate to keep taking it apart because its a little bit of a PITA with that little snap ring that holds the MAF to the airbox tube. Im getting both code 33 and 34, originally i got a code for the O2 sensor but i replaced it and now that one is gone

wow sounds like fun. 32 code on mine but snowed here today. should b 47 tomorrow but my boss called me in. Dam I never get a break. I have a complete interior to put in including weather stripping. Have to drive it like that till the dam weather gets better. Going nuts over here. Parts keep coming in, & its not fun to drive with just carpet, & seats. The dash is in but just hanging. not even bolted in lol. So dont feel bad. I had to wire up a cd player on my lunch break. Well I dont know why somone else dont chime in on your problem.
