How to set timing on 5.7 TPI?

I know how to set timing on engines.......although, I want to make sure there are no tricks to the 5.7TPI. I have heard you only set the BASE timing, and the computer reads advance. I also heard you unplug a wire while setting base timing.

Could someone provide a quick walk-through on how to do this? The car is stumbling horribly from tip-in to about 1800RPM, and I suspect the previous owner messed up the timing.

Thanks!

there will be a plastic black cylindrical plug (est)on the passenger side fire wall loom you have to unplug and then just set the timing as usuall. Then replug the est plug and your done.

Thanks, I found a great write-up with pics and everything. Am I correct in thinking I have an L98? It's an 87 GTA. Just wanna make sure, cause the write up is for a Corvette L98. They mention setting the base timing in DRIVE, correct?

Ive always set my timing by myself so thats not an option, I set my timing in park (doesnt matter if there is a load on the motor or not timing stays the same)and then set my idle in park at @ 200rpm more than what they recommend in drive. Get in the car and check it in drive for the correct rpm (@600 rpm I believe) and adjust as neccesary.
