TPI Swap to carb
Not that i want to do this, but i'm considering..I may replace my 87 tpi to a non-computer carb/intake..I think the distributor will need to be changed??,and will need to lower fuel pressure..Anyway of doing this instead of going in the tank?? Also, anything else that will need to be changed or replaced?? Will the computer still work the other functions if i leave it hooked up??
Thanks

Re: TPI Swap to carb
Best advise I can give would be to swap to CCC carb and distributor, unless you are building a strip car. Properly tuned, CCC's give good mileage and performance. Aftermarket carbs cannot alter Air/Fuel ratio, so you are always above or below the desired 14.7, which is what the CCC tries to accomplish. Also important if you need to pass emmisions test.
I just did the opposite swap- Carb to TPI- mostly because I just wanted the look, and wanted to try it. If you are serious about the swap, PM me. I have everything you would need, including computer, engine harness, Edelbrock Intake, Rebuilt carb, Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner, cables, brackets, emissions parts, etc.

Re: TPI Swap to carb
youll have to switch over to a vacuum advance distributor, youll need an intake manifold, also youll have to find a way to lower your psi for the fuel. our tpi's work around 40 psi while carbs need around 6-8 so you can either get a regulator which i hear works horribly and will kill the pump eventually. or get an intake electric carb pump or just a pickup, and get a regular carb cam driven pump.
darby, im looking for a carb pickup for my tpi to carb build, is that something you got?

Gurk, I have a carb pickup, but it came out of an El Camino. Don't think it will work for your Camaro, if that is the app you are looking for.

Re: TPI Swap to carb
Unfortunately, Size Does Matter. On an Elky, the angle of the tank where the Pickup is mounted is at a pretty good angle. Most Passenger cars are flat. The depth of the tanks are also different. The wrong pick-up just wont fit. The Carbed pickup's are not that expensive new- $25-35. Worth getting a new one, just to have the new Fuel Guage Sender. They tend to get worn out over time.
