doing a TPI swap
ok...i'm doing a TPI swap on my 87 (don't roast me) Monte Carlo SS. I am getting a 305 TPI/Auto out of an 89 fbird. I have been really impressed with my 88 IROC, and my monte is in dire need of a new motor(drink oil) so I thought lets go fuel injection. I can get this motor/trans/wiring setup for a grand...motor only has 3k on it..yeah you heard me right 3 thousand miles it was a gm product development car, i got to snoopin in it and found a data log book documenting actual miles so I know the odometer is right, no rollover here. is there anything in particular that i should know or look for...is this speed density? really don't know alot about TPI even less for fbirds.

Re: doing a TPI swap
well make sure you get the full setup, harness to motor to trans etc
as far as the speed density i couldnt tell you without seein it, if its got a mass air flow sensor then no, if memory serves speed density has MAP not MAF, again the difference is like TBI to TPI, some love each and sme hate them with a passion. Ive heard that if youre gettin into prom tuning that maf has a quicker response time than SD and so its "favored" wether this is true or not i dont know
just follow the basics, does it look complete? if it is as good of a deal as it sounds then is highly probable, dont be afraid to ask the seller about TPI if he/she is honest theyll tell you what you need to know
good luck

Re: doing a TPI swap
the most important thing is the under dash computer and every wire connected to it. and that means every wire. they go through the firewall too.
i suggest you get a bunch of plastic name tags and put a tag on a connection and one with the same number on the tpi where it is connected, take a picture then unhook it. do that with every wire you see.
and when you follow them into the firewall dont just pull them, it will not work that way.
also look at the numbers on the computer box, its under the passenger dash.
there are only one way things plug into there.
you will also need fuel lines, pull them if you can and the fuel pump too. remember that tpi needs a constant flow of fuel so you need dual fuel lines.
take everything that is connected to the engine, including the motor mounts.

.... just get your hands on the TPI setup, in tank fuel pump assembly, fuel lines, mechanical pump block off plate, throttle cable, tranny (detent) cable, and a couple of relays, and the dizzy. I just did this not even a week ago w/my 86 Z28 that came with a carburetor, but will be running MS II w/the T88 turbo instead of the stock ECM;
