I have been having one hell of a time with my 91 Z28. I was planning on selling it before this happened, but no one bought and now I am stuck with a supposed bad fuel pump. What happened was I went out (about ten miles) and I hung out for about an hour. I went to start it back up to leave in a parking lot and it ran a little funny. I put it in gear and giving it gas did nothing, so I coasted into another parking space and it shut itself off on the way. I turned the key back on and couldn't hear the fuel pump and it hasn't started since. I tested the relay and checked some wires before I had it towed back home. Now, I am looking through the manual to make sure there is no access hole for the pump. So, it doesn't look like there is and the book is saying I will have to go through the joy of dropping the axle, sway bar and ladder bars before I can even think of dropping the tank.

So, here I am, tryin to be quick and lazy about this, but effective and legit (I know, it doesn't quite go together). So my question is... if I can find dimensions somehow on the location of the pump in relation to the tank, how does it sound to cut my own access hole in the floor board of the hatch to access the pump easily from the top??

 

Do a search, it's been discussed many times. Some with pics. It can be done, but it's a hack. You'll have to cut and splice 4 lines to get the pump out. If you do it, use compression fittings not rubber hose, especially on the high pressure line.

Make sure the pump is getting power before you dive in.

 

I am planning on doing the search today cuz I will probably pull back the carpet today and mark it off. I am considering cutting a square hole that'll be about 18x18 inches to be safe and make it possible to not have to cut and splice. Thanks for the help though!

Edit: And I checked the relay, I am running power to and from it with no noise from the pump. I laid under the car yesterday and saw an electrical connector directly in front of the fuel tank that runs to the pump. I will check that today as well cuz it is the easiest to get to... I think it is either the oil/fuel press switch or the cut-off switch. I gotta check the schemata again.

 

Plenty of debate over this repair. I put an access hole for my TBI, but if my TPI pump ever goes, I will drop the rear to fix it. Lots and lots of pics about access holes, like JV9999 said, do a search you will have all the info you need.

Awesome! Well thank you all for the help, I got some dimensions and I am about to run up to the store and get some cutting discs and pull the carpet back. I will let you know how it goes! I am hoping the find an access hole already in it as well! Thanks again!
