305 TPI (worth rebuilt)

Hi! I am new around here and the V8 world..I had bunch off cars from a fiero gt to 7 Civics to a Mazda RX-8 to a Miata...Now I just inherit my old childhood dream car, my dads 1987 GTA 305 TPI 5-SPEED. So the plan is to restore it to when it was like new with a couple HP more.

The question is : Is it worth to rebuild the original engine?
Is it possible to get more than 300hp from that engine?
It seems like there is a lot going on in the vacuum/anti-pollution on the intake manifold. Can it be removed?

Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Re: 305 TPI (worth rebuilt)

Welcome to thirdgen! Nice looking car. For good info on building a 305 check out thread 356 RWHP TPI 310 build. There is some great info on building a 305. Of course if it were me, I would find a 350 block and heads, everything else fits on the 350. Also, if you are keeping the TPI, try to keep the vacuum lines, they are there for a purpose and function well for that purpose. If they are removed, performance and mileage will suffer. Are you in Canada? The speedo is in Km's. Cool. Oh yeah, if your going to under the hood a lot in the future, it's probably a good idea to replace the hood struts.

yes it is, although you can buy different plenum, runners, and manifold that will flow more.

hood struts who needs 'em when you got vice grips...LOL!

anyway welcome nice GTA! rebuilding depends are you goals. does keeping it original matter?

as far as rebuilding the 305, sure it is, TPI works great on the smaller cubes which it was designed for, its in a 350 where it lacks above 5500 rpms.

plus the almighty $$$ matters...your plans for the car depend on what you want to do w/ it. good luck w/ it.

oh yea BTW...the T-5 tranny cant handle that much power so be aware how much you thow at it.
