Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I cant read thru all pages, but it seems like its not possible to get this part anymore ?

I wouldnt have been bad to have one on the shelf for "just in case moments"

Do anyone have a link to an 1989 EGR Temp Sensor or all they all out of stock everywhere?

Or do someone have one for sale at a good price shipped to sweden ?

YEEEEEEEEES!

The local store in my town (Sweden) have the item Standard Automotive # ETS2 in stock, they have it in stock price is 290 SEK (approx: $40)

Pic from the store in town.

I will go and buy one to keep on my shelf for "just in case" moments.
I will ask them how many they have in stock to, and if they have many I might be able to help fellow friends in US to get one to..

Now its easter holiday so its on thuesday I can go in and ask..

So the hope for EGR Temp sensors isnt out yet.

Hello Theking!!

Good score!!!

I wish that it was as easy to do that here!!!

I bought three, when I found some "on line", one for a replacement, and two spares for the two 305 TPI Camaros that I have!!

P.S. You said that the local store in your town had them in stock, did they tell you this, or did it show you on line??? Sometimes, the on line stock turns out to be, out of stock!!!

Keep us posted!!!

Hello Rob's 92 gta!!

You can buy an EGR Solenoid for the LT1 equipped Camaro/Firebird/Corvette brand new at the dealer still, and it will work for you!! It will require a bit of fabrication of some vaccum lines, the bracket, and maybe the electrical connector, but it will work!!

EGR Solenoid
GM Part # 1997223
AC Delco # 214-396
Price is $42.25 CDN

Electrical Connector
GM Part # 12102747
AC Delco # PT374
Price is $41.05 CDN

You may luck out also with the electrical connector, it changed in 1987-88 to the one that I have listed above!!

You could always cheap out, and go to the junk yard!! Parts aren't new there but they are cheaper!!!

Hello y84pauloflondon!!

I checked autopartauctions.com a couple of days ago, and it seems that they are all sold out, as I couldn't find them in their parts search!!!

It could also mean that they are holding out...........!!!!

Hello y84pauloflondon!!

vetteoz found one in post #341 in this thread, problem was the wire was shorter, so you'd have to splice it, if it wouldn't reach!!

Don't know if they have sold out, came from a site called mechanicnet.com!!

I just checked out that site, and it seems fishy to me, no links to any automotive items, but looks like a hosting/consultation site!!

Maybe I missed something, check it out for yourself!!

I rechecked the link that vetteoz provided, and came up with ebay store maintained by (mechanics-mall.com) looks better!! I guess I just goofed at first!!

Still couldn't find any at that place either!!!

First off, I may be new to this site and all, however it beats the heck out of camaroforums.com. 2nd off, I found another site that may have the egr temp switch, needing one for my Iroc, I placed an order for one earlier today. The website is http://www.theautopartsshop.com/sear...Text=DETS10113. If it works, I'll let you guys know. if not, ill keep searching!

now heres a question about this..as far as i've read, the EGR sensors are discont for up till the 89 3rd gens...and your saying that the info posted above will for work for "robs 92 GTA"

i did an engine swap, i swapped engines from an 89 GTA into my 91 camaro but with a MAP set up, so technically a 91 setup..so will I be able to get one for a 91...or should i get one for an 89? (thats discont)

that could also explain why the check engine has been on ever since i swapped engines..could never figure out why and its gotta be the egr, all the symptoms add up to it. thanks for the help.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

The MAP cars don't use an EGR Temp sensor, they detect a change in vacuum when the EGR is commanded open. If you are using the 91 computer it wouldn't be looking for an EGR temp sensor input. What is your engine code?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

uhm good question, I still dont know what the code is, just figured from all the symptoms that my car is doing that its the EGR.

well if it came from an 89 engine then that means that it did have that sensor..i think since it was a MAF and we just turned it into a MAP since my 3rd gen is a 91 so we could pass smog, etc.

the ECM is from a V6 with a V8 chip in it.

Hello samiam91RS!!

Use the paperclip trick at your ALDL connector, under the dash to retrieve the SES code!!

Connect terminal A to terminal B with the paperclip, turn the key to the on position, "do not start the car" and watch the SES light flash the codes!!

The light will flash code 12, one flash, pause, then two flashes, it will do this three times, then it will flash any trouble codes likewise!! ie code 32 is, three flashes, pause, two flashes!!

Once your codes have been flashed, it will repeat the whole sequence over again, always starting with code 12!!

To end the flashing, turn the key off, then disconnect the paperclip!!

See what you get!!

thanks for the help and the link, fortunately after straining the cr@p out of my eyes i found the A and B terminals...

soooooo........what the little blinking ses light tells me is code 12..which is basic i guess?

and code 34...and code 43....F--K my life....

just been researching in the search and not really finding anything...although every post almost everyone assumes something different to replace, and that seems like that can add up to a lot of money! time to make a few posts..

thanks again everyone! thats the first step towa5rds success!!

Hello samiam91RS!!

Try erasing the codes first, then start up the car, check for a SES light, no light, go for a drive until the car gets up to operating temp, and see if there is an SES light, no light, your good to go, SES light, check out the codes that you get using the paperclip method again, and start by trying a fix for the lowest numbered code first!!

Remember that when a code is set it can be set two ways, a hard or a soft failure!! Hard failures usually are exactly as stated, a componet/sensor has broken, soft failures usually are set because the ECM didn't like the info that it was getting from a sensor over a period of time!!

Hard failures usually turn on the SES light right away, or immediately after the computer enters closed loop operation at operating temperature, and the light stays on!!

Soft failures usually turn on the SES light because for a given amount of time, the sensor sent bad info to the ECM, causing it to register a complaint (SES light), these soft failures usually turn out the SES light after a short period of time, or when the ECM starts to like the sensor info again!!

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

ahh i see..

well in that case its got to be a hard failure...because ive reset the computer a few times from doing other little things here and there.. like 02 sensor etc.

and it omes right on as soon as i fire it up basically..so i guess ill start the trouble shooting and start fixin things up!

thanks for the info, its greatly appreciated, and and to anyone else that helped me out.

now..to fix er up so she can finally run right!!!

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I dont think that'll work. the threaded end looks to big. and if you look closely to the connector, it looks like it has 2 female ends. Our EGR's are 1 wire. Compare the actual EGR to your new found EGR. there is a big difference. Threads would match up since the "newegr switch" has a elongated shaft/rod.

That photo is probably a generic photo and doesn't represent the actual part.

For $12 and change, I'd take a chance and order one.

yeah i took my chances and ordered that one, just to find out they cant get that one either. so no im stuck thinking.. i was doing some head gaskets on my car, and during the process of hookin the egr up, the metal piece split into two..(not knowing there a pain to find) so i cant really splice any wires or anything like that.

there actually not that bad, i did it all myself. i got this car for 800 bucks, id add an image but i dont know how. has a fresh paint job, magnaflow exhaust, headers, new performance suspension and brakes all the way around. was runnin really weird. then the head gaskets gave out. since then i broke that egr temp switch, havent found one in 6 months. so there it sits.. she wont pass our emissions up here in wa. kinda bummed.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

thats blows. If you wanna take a pic upload it on Tinypic.com and just post the url. Sucks about the tempswitch. Its not that hard to build but its a big investment for companys that could care less. Im all about the future of Pontiac. Being these cars are done for the rest of the time the World Entails.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

one small step for Chevy; one giant leap for Third Gens. Okay guys. I finally got my hands on a lazer thermometer and I've got some results. I turned on the IROC for about 15 minutes and I had a voltimeter connected to the lead of the EGR temp switch. The other end was grounded to the engine. I finally got a reading (EGR switch grounding itself). I then shot the lazer at the base of the EGR valve and got a temp of 136* F. Now I was thinking about the Ford vehicles themp switch/thermistor. Maby we can mount a Ford thermistor or switch just behind the radiator so that the radiant heat can heat up a switch. Once the radiant heat reaches 136 or above, the switch would then allow the grounding to pass through the wire which would be "jerry rigged" to the wiring harness thus allowing the ECM to see that supposively our EGR Temp Switch is grounded. The next quest is to find a thermistor that is rated at 140* that can be suspended just behind the radiator. Does this sound like a good idea to our discontinued EGR Switch?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Here is the challenge at hand. To reduce the possibility of plaguriam, I got this info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermistor

A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance varies with temperature. The word is a portmanteau of thermal and resistor. Thermistors are widely used as inrush current limiters, temperature sensors, self-resetting overcurrent protectors, and self-regulating heating elements.
Thermistors differ from resistance temperature detectors (RTD) in that the material used in a thermistor is generally a ceramic or polymer, while RTDs use pure metals. The temperature response is also different; RTDs are useful over larger temperature ranges, while thermistors typically achieve a higher precision within a limited temperature range [usually −90 °C to 130 °C].

Thermistor symbol

Assuming, as a first-order approximation, that the relationship between resistance and temperature is linear, then:
where
ΔR = change in resistance ΔT = change in temperature k = first-order temperature coefficient of resistance Thermistors can be classified into two types, depending on the sign of k. If k is positive, the resistance increases with increasing temperature, and the device is called a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor, or posistor. If k is negative, the resistance decreases with increasing temperature, and the device is called a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor. Resistors that are not thermistors are designed to have a k as close to zero as possible(smallest possible k), so that their resistance remains nearly constant over a wide temperature range.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Now with everybody's help, we need to find a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor that allows current flow at around 140* so that we can relieve ourselves from this now discontinued part (EGR Temp Sensor). I tried to do a search but I have not found anything that can be used.
