Underdrive pulleys, do you really need the alternator pulley?

Can I get away with the crank pulley only? Or will it really lower my alternator output?

If you do a lot of sit-and-idle you'll want to do the alternator pulley. If you don't spend a lot of time idling, you don't absolutely need to change it. By the time you hit ~1200 RPMs the engine speed has more than made up for the difference in pulley ratio.
