Something is not right.

So I got an 87 Iroc with a 350 TPI in it. one day it decides to backfire on me and now it barley runs. It struggles and it makes a knocking sound in the engine. It never ran very good in the first place and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it could be. the car is in beautiful shape and I have no Idea why it happened. I didnt even give it much gas. Any help?

Re: Something is not right.

How many miles are on the car and what kind of knock?

First off, check your basics such as wires, cap, rotor button, wires, plugs, etc.

It sounds like your timing is way off. This could be the result of it actually being out of time or your distributor going bad. The knock is concerning though as that could be a bad bearing or could be pre-detonation.

Try adjusting your timing. Disconnect the EST wire when doing it. If that does not work look at possibly replacing the electronic parts of the distributor.

Do your homework. Check out http://grumpysperformance.com He has a TON of information that will guide you correctly. Learn all that you can, develop a troubleshooting plan, and start wrenching!

Then you could do a compression test.

A backfire and then knock? Hopefully you didn't bend a rod.

Re: Something is not right.

Well bud, not really sure as to what the exact problem with yours is, but just a couple days ago my GTA started to act a little rough, next day it ran a little rougher, and then the third day came and the damn thing didn't wanna run for nothing. It would fire up, run like absolute crap for a second or two, then die.. I ended up having to have it towed home to my mechanic two hours away... (I'm in college so I don't live where I go to school)

Today I called and found out that my intake valve is burned on cylinder #8...

Anything can happen man, my motor only has 21k miles on it after a complete rebuild and what'che know, somethin like this happens...

Even though it'll be expensive, and since I'm gonna have to have my head pulled anyways to fix this, I guess now I won't have to pay a separate charge to put on my new Edelbrock intake manifold I'm getting for Christmas
