EGR Delete Steps
Well guys, just one month ago after feeling triumphant that I finally got the car to run without a CES light since the day I bought the car, today it came on again. Only this time it was not the good ol code 44 I was so accustomed to. It was code 32.
Searching around TGO about the discontinuation of things such as the EGR temp sensor and solenoid, I'm very leary of the idea of pulling these parts from a yard just to have them fail again a year or two later down the road.
Before any famous names here chime in, I am aware that what I am considering is a violation of federal law and a malevolent fleet of aliens will zoom down to **** probe us should I remove my EGR. Maybe everyone involved in corporate/federal should have gotten together and decided NOT to discontinue such a vital part that is not only essential to the car's operation but is also a federal law. Personally I think It's just one piece of the pie to force people to go with newer cars, but I'm not here to start a conspiracy theory.
What I was wanting to know are all the steps involved deleting the EGR on an '85 305TPI. I have already gathered that I will need a block-off plate for the manifold, but what becomes of all the vacuum lines going to the EGR solenoid? Do they simply get plugged? Another question I had is about the EGR temp sensor. I will check again at my next opportunity, but the last few times I did get a peek underneath the plenum I do not remember seeing this part in the EGR valve. In fact, the only wires I explicitly remember going underneath the plenum were for the IAT sensor. If this temp sensor is not present, does that mean that I do not have to reflash the PROM? I thought all TPI's had this temp sensor?
Also, would someone be able to point me in the right direction as far as disabling the EGR within the PROM? I have never gotten into PROM burning before.
Thanks guys!

i put a block off plate on mine and plugged up the line and never had a problem. heck even ran a tad better because the egr had a vacuum leak i never knew about.
Re: EGR Delete Steps
The earlier MAF-type TPI systems have that temp probe there for a reason- to positively verify the valve is opening when the ECM commands it. As such, physically blocking it off is only part of the job. You really have to turn it off in the chip programming if you want to avoid a check engine light.

First off, I have to say I absolutely loved your whole conspiracy theory/malevolent aliens rant!
It amazes me that the idiots who always get so upset over any smog removal post even own a damn "musclecar". And secondly, since code 32 is by far the most infamous, PITA problem to get rid of, I don't blame you at all for wanting to ditch the EGR system. This may sound like a cop-out type answer, but personally, I just had PCMforless disable EGR in my new PROM they burned for me.
But really, if you want to keep your SES light functioning without it coming on all the time, you do need to disable/turn off EGR function in the chip. When I started getting code 32 constantly on my old 305 TBI, I just plucked the SES bulb out of the dash and removed the EGR valve, filled it up with RTV, and bolted it back on so there wouldn't be any problem with a visual inspection. That was my last resort after attempting all the usual repair steps to get the light to stay off. I wanted to do it right on the new motor though, so I had it disabled in the chip and fabbed up a block-off plate. Besides, I'm running a Superram on the new motor, so a smog tech would need a good mirror and a strong flashlight to even notice the valve is missing under that huge plenum!
I know absolutely zero about burning chips, so paying a mail order tune place to disable it was the best option in my case.

To turn off the EGR within the PROM chip, you'll have to visit a DYNO shop since they are specialized in that area. Also since your there, maby they'll even tune up your chip so that you'll get the most horsepower while making your car more fuel efficient.

Re: EGR Delete Steps
unless the egr sticks open put a bb in the vaccuum line and it wont open anymore and you wont need a block off plate. wont help the ses light tho.
