Thinking of removing EGR. pros and cons?

Hi there...

I am almost finished with my engine rebuild and transmission overhaul.
I have a 1987 LG4 engine that I have converted to TPI. The engine is also rebuilt with new bearings, pistons, camshaft, valves, gaskets +++

Anyway my question is what are the pros and cons of removing the EGR system. You see that I had some problems before I started the engine rebuild with the code 32 on the EGR system. I did a lot of vacuum tests and to me it looked like everything was fine on the system.

Anyway, I am in to this CHIP programming also so I know what to do, if I want to disable the system.

But are there any pros and cons by disabling the system?...
gas mileage mayby?..I know that in WOT the system is disabled anyway so performance gain has nothing to do with the system..

The only real downside to removing your egr would be if you happen to have emissions testing in your area and they do a visual inspection to make sure everything is there. If you don't have to worry about a smog check, and since you know how to turn egr off in the chip, I'd say go for it. That stupid code 32 is why I hate having egr. It seems like no matter what you try and fix or replace it's nearly impossible to get the computer to stop tripping that code every time you turn around. I doubt it'll affect your gas mileage either. I took mine off because I got sick of the "service engine soon" light coming on all the time. You can either make or buy a block off plate for where the valve bolts to the intake manifold. Summit and Jegs both sell the block off plate. I just made my own. It was cheap and really easy to do.

Ok..I forgot to mention the smog checks around here in Norway are not so serious when it comes to old cars. Since the old american cars is just lovely to watch driving around the roads they want them to do that even though they may pollute a little bit more than a new Audi 1.8 or something like that.

I think I would disable the system then. I am also trying to get rid of some hoses and pipes and componements to clean up the engine bay.
As long as my TPI system still works perfect and the car will idle perfect I am satisisifed.

I think I would buy a block off plate then and disable the EGR system once and for all..

Re: Thinking of removing EGR. pros and cons?

The hot exhaust gas running through the intake manifold adds excessive heat to your intake charge, that in fact does limit WOT power by lowering the threshold for detonation. The carbon particulate building up on the backside of the intake valve will also cost you power at WOT. Poor valve seals are the primary cause of the build-up there, but EGR does contribute. Both sources should be addressed.
It is also beneficial to run a clear plastic fuel filter in-line on the intake manifold side of your PCV system to catch the oil.
