The only way to really "by pass" the MAF is to convert your car to speed density which was used 90-92. As far as a cold air set up, the camaros really have a nice intake set up to begine with. Many guys will gut the baffles from the air filter boxes, install K&N's and be done with it. If you are more adventurous, some in the forum have fabricated their own ram-air boxes which draw air from both sides of the grill (where fog lights are mounted) and connect to the factory air intake. Search the forums on the subject, its been discussed a many many times..

There really isnt a aftermarket cold air kit for our cars anymore, SLP was the only one I know of that even produced one and it has been discontinued. Dont bother with anything off ebay, all those kits are is a cheap steel tube with a cheap cone filter and they do nothing but draw hot engine compartment air. Camaros however dont really need a cold air the factory set up works well with a few mods. Firebird guys (like myself) can really benefit from a cold air. Just the SLP kit alone on my car dropped it .3 in the 1/4 mile

Good Luck!

Yah what Wooderson said

Removing lower air baffles will free up about 50 CFM from this guys testings. K&N air filters help some too.

I believe stock maf is a restriction at higher HP but not sure at what point it starts limiting power. Somebody on here did a homemade large maf unit by placing stock maf guts into a larger metal tube. I think bigger issue with maf is with computer tuning. ECU has a limit based upon maf. Even with this I think there are ways to get around it (open loop?). Not too sure about this, just throwing out what I read. Maybe somebody here knows more.
Found some links to mega maf:

Here are two posts for making stock air lid bigger. Basically take apart lid and make it 1/2" taller with plastic inserts. I am trying this now. Seems easy, just takes a lot of time.

Hawks sells metal duct piece for directing air from fog light tunnels up to air lid. Most people seem to make their own out of metal or dryer tubing.

stay away from K&N, unless you got speed density. best configuration would be the maf right in front of the TB, corvette catalogs have a smooth tube, instead of the stock ribbed for her pleasure tube. and build a ram air system. like cheap. I would if i had a chevy...oh and k&N ruins MAF sensors in a months or so, a three hundo
part, stay away from oil filters

I've used K&N's with Mass Air for 13 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I even removed the screens and filed down the fins. I've used both brand new K&Ns and ones that I cleaned & recharged myself. Never had a code or a MAF fail. 4th & 5th Gen Camaros also come with MAFs, many put on K&Ns, and never heard of them damaging the MAF.

MAF's fail every so often. It'd be very hard if not impossible to trace it to the filters. I guess you'd have to see air filter lube caked to the wire in the MAF. I've never heard of anyone finding that. Heat is usually what kills MAFs.

Removing the lower baffles will definitely make a difference. I've done it with both a 305 and a 350 TPI, and it is noticeable. The difference with the "ram air" mod, which I have done myself, is that, while the stock intake is cold air, you're getting even colder air from the very tip of your grill instead of right in front of the hot radiator. There have been studies that show ram air doesn't really work and is just a marketing gimmick. I don't remember the exact numbers, but the conclusion was that until you're going well over 200mph, you're not forcing or ramming any air past your air filter. To put it another way, ram air will not increase cfm until you're hitting a ridiculous speed over 200 mph. The benefit is getting colder outside air further away from the engine.

The good news is you can remove the baffles for free, and build the ram air tubes cheap with a quick trip to the hardware store.
