Hot Start Issue

i am having this problem with my car. i recently replaced the pickup coil and cleaned my distributor and replaced the module but this problem started BEFORE i did this so i don't believe it is anything that i have done ok here's what my car does: engine at operating temp, i can turn off the engine and then try to start it again but engine only cranks and does not start. i have perfect spark when this happens. the car has new injectors and 45 psi at the rail and 35 while cranking EGR valve is still attached but is disconnected, engine timing is set to 6" degrees and i have no codes except EGR 32 and all the sensor data is in spec when checking with a scan tool. I am going to do some checks tomorrow to see what i can find. ANY input will be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Hot Start Issue

Mine did that a few years ago and it drove me nuts trying to figure it out. I finally narrowed it down to 2 things. One being the coil. I went through 2 MSD stock replacement coils. I found they are junk, but was told by the owner of a speed shop near me that the MSD after market high performance coil is a good coil, and recommended it for my stroker engine so I got that. I also made a better heat shield for the starter/solenoid and wraped the starter/solenoid wiring in thermo wrap I also had the starter/solenoid rebuilt with better parts. Last summer was a good test, as it started every time, even after being heat soaked from driving.

Re: Hot Start Issue

I kept my stock coil so when I was having starting problems originally I put the old one back on and problem solved. Then about 6 months later same thing again. Put the stock coil on and it started right up. Thats when I started looking into different coils. The MSD coil I use now is #8226.

Re: Hot Start Issue

That was the strange thing. I put my timing light on it using it to check for spark. It would show a weak flash or intermittent flash. Then if I let it sit for awhile it would be ok?

Did you replace the ignition coil or the pickup coil in your distributor?

So it just cranks and cranks? If you wait a minute or two, it fires up?

I had a hard start when hot issue...I replaced the pickup coil and it hasn't done it since. I use to have to crank it but it would start eventually. Because you tell me that it starts after two minutes, I'm thinking that if you crank it long enough, it should start..

Re: Hot Start Issue

I know you wrote you installed new injectors, but you should do an ohm test on the injectors while they are cold and after it gets to operating temp. to see if the ohms drop. It's just an idea since you tried a bunch of other things. I believe it should be at 16 ohms.

Re: Hot Start Issue

i did this today because i am starting to get desperate. when car is cold it starts right up and runs great. when it gets to operating temp and i shut it off and try to restart it, nothing happens. it just cranks and cranks and i do have spark, so it has to be no fuel. i will check the injectors again tomorrow thank you for the help

Re: Hot Start Issue

I figured it out guys!! i called up the local mechanic that my family has gone to for years, and i told him everything that i had replaced and checked. He said that he was 99% positive that it was the pickup coil that was bad. well i went down to oreillys and got another coil and installed it. car started right up and i let it warm up and i then shut it off. car fired right up first time!! i am so happy right now!! my mchanic mike campbell is a GENIUS!

Re: Hot Start Issue

Hey guys....I'm having a similar hot start issue, but with a little difference: After the care gets hot and sits a few mins....it will initially fire, but just a few seconds, then shuts down. If you let it sit for a while, it then will start normally just like when it's cold. Could this be the pickup coil also?

Re: Hot Start Issue

it could be the pickup, it could also be the module is getting hot and cooling off: it could possibly even be your fuel pressure. Have you had you fuel pressure checked recently? Has the car had a tune up?

Re: Hot Start Issue

I have not had a recent tune-up. Nor have I checked the fuel pressure. This problem has existed for a long time, but due to it's intermittent nature, the dealer where we take the car has been unable to resolve it. Fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump relay was replaced 4 years ago. Others have told me it could be a pressure problem. Thanks for answering.

Re: Hot Start Issue
